We begin each day where we left off the previous day. The principle is immutable. We cannot begin a journey from where we are not or from where we wish we were. ALL JOURNEYS MUST BEGIN FROM WHERE WE ARE; all that we learn is based upon what we already know; all that we can do will be the result of what we have previously done.

In life all must choose at times. Sometimes, two possibilities are good; neither is evil. Usually, however, one is of greater import than the other. When in doubt, each must choose that which concerns the good of others—the greater law—rather than that which chiefly benefits ourselves—the lesser law. . . . That was the choice made in Eden.

Man . . . was made from different and opposite substances [i.e., dust and spirit] . . . [and] these two things contend against each other in man: so that if the [spirit of man], which has its origin from God, gains the mastery, it is immortal, and lives in perpetual light; if, on the other hand, the body shall overpower the [spirit], and subject it to its dominion, it is in everlasting darkness and death . . . [and will subject] them to everlasting punishment.

The place appointed for Adam’s residence was a garden, not an ivory house nor a palace overlaid with gold, but a garden . . . Adam too was born into humble circumstances. This is a clarion call to the Saints to live lives of simplicity rather than excess, humility rather than extravagance.

The submission of one’s will is really the only uniquely personal thing we have to place on God’s altar. The many other things we “give” . . . are actually the things He has already given or loaned to us. However, when you and I finally submit ourselves, by letting our individual wills be swallowed up in God’s will, then we are really giving something to Him! It is the only possession which is truly ours to give!”

Faith is based on truth, and is preceded by knowledge. Until a person gains a knowledge of the truth he can have no faith… faith and truth cannot be separated; if there is to be faith, saving faith, faith unto life and salvation, faith that leads to the celestial world, there must first be truth. Not only is true knowledge of God a conditional precedent to the acquirement of this faith, but faith can be exercised only by those who conform to the principles of truth which come from the true God who actually exists.

Eve was “not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled on by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved.”

The sin is not in wishing to become like God. The sin is in attempting to do so without God.

“Charity is not developed entirely by our own power, even though our faithfulness is a necessary qualification to receive it. Rather, charity is 'bestowed’ upon the true followers of Christ (Moroni 7:48). The purpose of the endowment of charity is not merely to cause Christ’s followers to engage in charitable acts towards others, desirable as that is. The ultimate purpose is to transform HIS followers to BECOME LIKE HIM.”

It is the moments and the little acts that make the sum of the life of a man. We may pass the major exam but flunk the daily quizzes. Every moment’s actions are important. Discipleship is very local.

As in the parable of the wheat and the tares, the tares of the field may not be distinguishable from the wheat until they begin to bear fruit. It is the same for us as we get older. When we choose to fill our lives with good and uplifting experiences, then as we age our “fruit” will begin to show forth distinguishing us from the sad and miserable who did not choose the best for their lives.
