I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better.

Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing: I desire so to conduct the affairs of this administration that if at the end, when I come to lay down the reins of power, I have lost every other friend on earth, I shall at least have one friend left, and that friend shall be down inside me.

My father taught me to work; he did not teach me to love it. I never did like to work, and I don’t deny it. I’d rather read, tell stories, crack jokes, talk, laugh – anything but work.

Westrum (1992) describes the Redstone missile development headed by Wernher Von Braun. After careful and painstaking preparation and much to the chagrin and puzzlement of everyone, an early test of the Redstone missile went out of control. It was surprising that one of the engineers reported that he may have accidentally caused a short circuit during the prelaunch testing. Further investigation revealed that indeed the engineer had caused the acci- dent. His openness and honesty in confessing his mistake in the end saved time and money. Costly retesting and expensive redesigns were unnecessary. Upon hearing that the engineer had voluntarily reported the mistake that had caused the out-of-control missile, Von Braun sent the man a bottle of cham- pagne. In many organizations, such mistakes are routinely hidden rather than admitted because punishment, not reward, is the typical consequence. It is in organizations that focus on uncovering failure for the sake of improvement that such open and honest behavior of subordinates is rewarded.

Kindness will beget friendship and favor, but anger or passion will drive away sympathy. To win one’s respect and confidence, approach him mildly, kindly. No friendship was ever gained by an attack upon principle or upon man, but by calm reason and the lowly Spirit of Truth.
If you have built for a man a better house than his own, and he is willing to accept yours and forsake his, then, and not till then, should you proceed to tear down the old structure. Rotten though it may be it will require some time for it to lose all its charms and fond memories of its former occupant. Therefore let him, not you, proceed to tear it away. Kindness and courtesy are the primal elements of gentility.

The Savior increased in grace as he lived the commandments of God and blessed the lives of others. His growth was accelerated above that of his fellowmen because of the reciprocal nature of receiving strength of the Spirit when extending grace. That is, he called upon his Father for power and strength to bless others in their need. In answer to his prayers, he was empowered and grew beyond his previous abilities, thus, receiving grace FOR grace. Christ was foremost in reaching out in compassion to others. Therefore, he received greater grace from God in his efforts than any other person.

Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.

“Some Christians carry their religion on their backs. It is a packet of beliefs and practices which they must bear. At times it grows heavy and they would willingly lay it down, but that would mean a break with old traditions, so they shoulder it again. But real Christians do not carry their religion, their religion carries them. It is not weight; it is wings. It lifts them up, it sees them over hard places, it makes the universe seem friendly, life purposeful, hope real, sacrifice worthwhile. It sets them free from fear, futility, discouragement, and sin—the great enslavers of men’s souls. You can know a real Christian, when you see him, by his buoyancy”

No man can sincerely resolve to apply to his daily life the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth without sensing a change in his own nature. The phrase, 'born again,’ has a deeper significance than many people attach to it. The changed feeling may be indescribable, but it is real. Happy the person who has truly sensed the uplifting, transforming power that comes from this nearness to the Savior, this kinship to the Living Christ.

There are spiritual disorders, too, and spiritual diseases that can cause intense suffering. The body and the spirit of man are bound together. Often, very often, when there are disorders, it is very difficult to tell which is which.

The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are accounts of the ministry of Jesus Christ, emphasizing His teachings, parables, miracles, Atonement, death, and Resurrection. In contrast, the Book of Mormon explains WHY the life and teachings of Jesus are so vitally important to the world. In other words, the Gospel writers tell WHAT Jesus did in the Old World. The Book of Mormon writers tell WHY it was so important that He came to earth and performed the Atonement to redeem us all.

Martin Harris’ rebuke for losing the manuscript:The temporal rebuke happened the very next day he confessed to Joseph Smith about the lost manuscript. Lucy Mack Smith believed it no coincidence that

It’s the questions we can’t answer that teach us the most. They teach us how to think. If you give a man an answer, all he gains is a little fact. But give him a question and he’ll look for his own answers.
